Arne Hall

Arn Hall

The hall was built in mock Tudor style for the famous Tate and Lyle sugar family in about 1880, at a time when Llandudno was just being developed as an important seaside resort. With commanding views across Llandudno bay it was the first major building at Craigside and was originally called Summerhill.  The legend has it that one of the wives of the family used to watch out with a telescope, from the tower, for their sugar boats on their way into Liverpool from the West Indies.

In 1914 it was bought by the Nott Lewis family and became the very famous Arn Hall girls school. When the original owners retired it was bought by two of the teachers, Miss Agnes Moffat and Miss Emma Hill. In 1935 the school was moved to Gloddaeth Hall.
Later it became a Doctor Barnardos home and for many years it provided a home for many orphaned children. After that it became a home for the treatment, mainly, of ex soldiers with psychiatric problems, until it was closed recently.

Is this just another example of the rape of Llandudno by greedy developers who have no care for our heritage. They are not taking care of housing need just housing greed. No doubt the proposed flats will be worth £millions just by virtue of the views from the site.

We would ask anyone who agrees with us that this building should be saved to write with their objections to the Chief Planning Officer, Conwy Borough Council Planning Dept, Civic Offices, Abergele Rd., Colwyn Bay, LL29 8AR
